Brakes Annual Charity Day
Amount raised £70,000
- When? 28/09/2017
- Charity? Meals & More
- Where? Celtic Manor Resort, Newport
On Thursday 28 September, at the fantastic Celtic Manor Resort, Brakes held their annual event but with a slight difference – this year it wasn’t just golf that was on offer but also the opportunity to be a “Thrillseeker” for the day or if that sounds way too much effort guests could choose to enjoy a relaxing day in the spa! Decisions, decisions!
The key objective of the day was to raise money for the Brakes Meals & More charitable initiative. Established in 2015, the programme addresses the issue of food poverty among children and young people. Since its launch Meals & More have established over 154 lunch clubs during the summer holidays providing 38,000 meals to children this summer alone, endorsed by the amazing support of Brakes suppliers.
The golf event took place on both the 2010 Ryder Cup and Roman Road courses applying a Ryder Cup Team competition with a US and European Captain. Throughout the competition there were challenges to test golfer’s skills with “Beat the Pro”; nearest the pin; hole in 1 and longest drive offering prizes to tempt!
With the sun shining and the competition well underway, the Brakes team and their suppliers provided a smorgasbord of fine food and indulgences throughout the courses. Utilising their very own Airstream Food Trailer on site, Brakes Senior Development Chef Alex Breach took to the helm to cook up fresh delights for passing golfers, whilst Joe Deluccis offered mouth-watering ice cream nearby – it was a relief for many that golf buggies were provided!
As the competition came to an end, golfers, thrill seekers and spa guests reconvened in high spirits, with an additional 150 evening guests, at the Caernarfon Suite for the drinks reception and the evening Gala Dinner. Sky Sports presenter Vicky Gomersall and sports journalist, Ian Stafford were polished comperes for the evening, providing fun and fundraising throughout.
Following a Welcome from Brakes UK CEO, Ton Christiaanse, the Ryder Cup result big announcement was made. Both the European & USA captains were invited on stage to find out how their teams had done. After a bit of bantering between the two – Vicky put them out of their misery. With only one point in it – the European Team were announced as the winners! As prizes were given to all individual and team competition winners, the delicious four-course meal was served interspersed with superb entertainment from Kev Orkian. Blending his offbeat humour with sensational performances on the piano, he set a high standard for the evening and received a standing ovation. Later into the evening a Q&A with Jeremy Guscott and Tom Shanklin revealed the competitiveness, laughs and camaraderie between the UK’s leading rugby heroes as they regaled stories from their careers.
Finally, having raised a magnificent £70,000 through Heads & Tails, Silent Auction and Main Auction – it was time to go Under the Covers, a hugely popular band who provided the perfect playlist to end the night!Brakes Annual Charity Day Handout
